Maternal Health Matters: How MTM Health is Driving Better Outcomes for Mothers and Babies
Pregnancy and early motherhood should be a time of joy, anticipation, and focused care, not a period marked by barriers to essential resources and support. Yet for many women across the United States, challenges like limited transportation, food insecurity, and gaps in access to care create unnecessary risks during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.
At MTM Health, we believe every mother deserves the opportunity to prioritize her health and her baby’s wellbeing. Through innovative and reliable transportation solutions, Mobile Integrated Health programs, and a deep commitment to addressing social determinants of health, we’re partnering with health plans to break down barriers and improve maternal health outcomes nationwide.
The Hidden Challenges Impacting Maternal Health
Maternal health in the United States faces persistent hurdles. Millions of women live in maternity care deserts, where access to prenatal and postpartum services is severely limited. Social determinants of health—such as reliable transportation, nutritious food, stable housing, and education—play a large role in pregnancy outcomes.
Food insecurity in particular stands out as a critical issue. Women experiencing it often face heightened risks of chronic conditions, complications during pregnancy, and poorer neonatal outcomes. Without consistent access to healthy foods, mothers may struggle with conditions like gestational diabetes or face increased chances of preterm birth and low birth weight. Programs like WIC and SNAP are vital, but getting to appointments, grocery stores, food banks, or farmers’ markets isn’t always feasible.
Missing prenatal visits or failing to pick up nutritious supplies can have ripple effects that last far beyond pregnancy. Reliable transportation bridges these gaps.
Our Transportation Solutions in Action in South Carolina
MTM Health collaborates with health plans across the country on targeted pilot programs designed to support expecting and new mothers through reliable non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT).
In South Carolina, for example, we partner with a health plan to provide free rides to eligible pregnant women and those up to six months postpartum. These rides cover essential trips such as those to:
- Grocery stores, food banks, pantries, and farmers’ markets for healthy food and baby supplies
- WIC appointments and other nutrition-related visits
- Other non-emergency needs that help mothers focus on self-care and their baby’s development
Our local team actively promotes these services by attending community events alongside our client. This outreach connects directly with eligible members and the organizations that support them, ensuring awareness and uptake of this valuable resource.
By removing transportation barriers, we empower mothers to attend appointments consistently, maintain proper nutrition, and reduce stress—key factors in healthier pregnancies and smoother postpartum recoveries.
Going Beyond Rides: Mobile Integrated Health and Holistic Support
Transportation is just one piece of the puzzle. Our Mobile Integrated Health (MIH) programs bring care directly into communities and homes, supported by dedicated Community Health Workers (CHWs). CHWs provide personalized education; help navigate benefits such as securing breast pumps, car seats, or formula; connect families to financial and housing resources; and offer advocacy during challenging times.
Real-life stories highlight the impact our CHWs make. For example, an MTM Health CHW worked with a young mother who was struggling to obtain a covered breast pump. The CHW guided the new mother through the process, helping her successfully obtain a pump, as well as other items such as a car seat for her baby and gift cards for preventive visits.
In another instance, a single mother was navigating domestic violence and financial strain. A CHW helped her access rental assistance, infant formula, and community support—lightening her load and paving the way for a brighter future.
These wraparound services address the full spectrum of social determinants of health, creating meaningful, lasting improvements in maternal and infant health.
Why This Work Matters—and What’s Next
Investing in maternal health through accessible transportation, nutrition support, and community-based care isn’t just compassionate. It’s effective. It helps lower risks of complications, supports healthier births, and sets families up for long-term success.
At MTM Health, we’re proud to partner with health plans to pilot and scale these solutions. Whether it’s providing rides to WIC appointments or grocery stores, or offering MIH support in communities nationwide, our focus remains on meeting mothers where they are—literally and figuratively.
If you’re a health plan interested in exploring partnership opportunities, we encourage you to reach out. Together, we can ensure more mothers and babies thrive!
